Terms of use — Chess & Arrows

Languages EN FR ES

Last updated: August 9, 2026

These terms cover the Chess & Arrows mobile app and its pages on yohapps.com. By downloading or using the app you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use it.

1. What the app is

Chess & Arrows is a study aid. You set up a position, or load a finished game, and the app shows the move a 1500, 1800, 2000 and 2200 player would each choose, with a short explanation of what that move does. It is free, it works offline apart from the two optional network features described in the privacy policy, and it contains no advertising.

2. What the app is not

  • It is not a coach and not a course. It does not teach a syllabus and it does not correct you.
  • It never rates you. There is no score, no accuracy percentage, no blunder tag and no evaluation bar, in either mode.
  • It is not an authority on the best move. The four levels are peers. None of them is presented as right and none as wrong.
  • It is not a chess server. There is no online play, no matchmaking, no accounts and no way to contact another person.

The moves shown are produced by opening books and a chess engine running on your device, adjusted to behave like a player of each strength. They are illustrative and can be wrong, including in positions where a strong human would disagree. The same is true of the plain-language explanations and the opening names. Use your own judgement; nothing in the app is a guarantee about a position.

3. Games and statistics from other services

Analysis mode can fetch a game from the public Lichess and Chess.com APIs, and the optional move-statistics feature queries the public Lichess opening explorer. Those services belong to other organisations and are used without any agreement between them and us. Chess & Arrows is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Lichess or Chess.com. Their terms and privacy policies apply to what they do, we do not control them, and we cannot guarantee that they are available, accurate or free to use in future. If either becomes unavailable, the parts of the app that depend on it stop working; the board and the arrows do not.

You are responsible for having the right to load any game or PGN you put into the app.

4. Your data

Saved positions, saved games and settings are stored only on your device. We have no access to them, cannot recover them, and are not responsible for their loss — including through device failure, loss or theft, deleting the app, or a device restore. If something matters to you, keep a copy elsewhere. See the privacy policy.

5. Licence and acceptable use

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, subject to the App Store or Google Play terms that also apply.

You agree not to:

  • copy, redistribute, resell or sublicense the app or its content;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except where law permits;
  • extract or reproduce the opening books, the explanation text or the artwork in another product or service;
  • use the app or anything in it to train a machine-learning system;
  • use it in any way that breaks the law where you are, or that breaches the terms of Lichess or Chess.com.

6. Intellectual property

The Chess & Arrows name, wordmark, icon, design, code, opening books, explanation text and the ArrowEngine chess engine are owned by Yohann Hemery, trading as YohApps, and are protected by copyright and trade mark law. The licence above transfers no ownership. Chess itself is nobody's property; this software is.

Third-party components included in the app are listed on its Third-party notices screen, with their licences. No copyleft chess engine is included in either mobile build.

7. No warranty

The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that the moves it shows are correct, or that it will improve your chess.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here limits rights you have under consumer law that cannot be limited by agreement.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, YohApps is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data or loss of profits, arising from or connected to your use of, or inability to use, the app.

Where liability cannot be excluded, our total aggregate liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid for the app or ten euros.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

9. Changes and availability

We may update the app and change these terms. Material changes will be reflected in the last-updated date above, and continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms. We may also stop distributing or supporting the app at any time; the copy already installed on your device keeps working until you remove it or your operating system stops supporting it.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, except where applicable law provides otherwise. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you may have under mandatory consumer protection laws. If any provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
